FLORIDA'S
MONSTER MUSHROOMS
Photographer finds Florida Monster
Mushrooms in Debbie's wake.
It took 30 inches of rain but that did it. The rain
brought out mushrooms that normally get big -- but sometimes
get huge. These are Macrocybe titans, known from
northern and central Florida and often found near populated
areas.
Although considered edible, these "Swamp Monsters"
are reportedly not very tasty. If they were, they could
feed a small town.
On a tip from an email chain of "mushroom
scouts", photographer Taylor Lockwood drove five
hours early Tuesday morning from Mount Dora, Florida
to crawl through the bushes and photographer this monster.
Because of the proximity to residents in the northern
Tallahassee area, the exact location of the mushrooms
will remain unrevealed.
